High school girl Tomoko Konagai is very shy and has few friends to talk with at school; she always thinks about her three cats: Ma the cheerful Munchkin, Ro the smart Russian Blue, and Shi the crybaby Singapura. Later, Tomoko befriends her classmate Azumi, another cat-loving girl who owns a Turkish Angora named Elza.
Elegant Yokai Apartment Life
Yūshi Inaba is a 16-year-old boy whose parents died three years ago. He moved into his uncle's house, but resolved to move into a dormitory in high school. Those plans were dashed when that dormitory burned down. He eventually finds an apartment with cheap 25,000-yen (about US$220) rent. Yūshi finds out too late that the apartment is home to supernatural creatures such as ghosts, yōkai, and mononoke, and his daily life becomes embroiled in the eccentric apartment.
Hinako Note
Hinako is poor at speaking, and lives in a rural part of Japan. She wants to improve her speech to be able to talk to people freely, so in high school, she transfers schools to Tokyo and plans to join a theater club. When she arrives, it turns out her boarding house is a secondhand bookstore, and a girl who eats books lives there.

Yurume Aida flunked her college entrance exams, but wants to try again. She decides to leave her old apartment to get away from the bad influence of her neighbors, who are also all college rejects.

Tatsumi is a high school student who lives on his own, until a merman named Wakasa takes up residence in his bathtub. His solitary lifestyle is turned upside down by the self-centered (but handsome) new roommate.
