Focusing on her trip, Ami takes a book titled First Love from her brother's room and finds a photo of her with a thought written on it: "If Ami weren't my sister..." Realizing Hiroshi's true feelings and her own, the next day, instead of her planned trip, Ami goes to London, shedding her insecure teenage self to become a woman who knows what she wants.

In a fishing village on a remote Japanese island, a fisherman named Shinji falls in love with a beautiful pearl-diver named Hatsue, and she with him. However, Shinji is poor, while Hatsue is the daughter of the richest man on the island. Hatsue's father only wants a son-in-law who will add to the (already considerable) family finances, so he doesn't approve of Shinji at all. The situation only gets worse when the villagers start to gossip and spread rumors about the two of them.
